Rachel Jackson Grimes, 96, of Utica, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 13, 1916 in Muhlenberg County to the late Elvis Jackson and Beulah Tipton Jackson.
Mrs. Grimes was co-owner of the Riverside Market in Hartford and a member of the Forrest Grove Baptist Church in Muhlenberg County. She was an avid UK Basketball fan, and enjoyed playing the piano, quilting, gardening and flowers, and most of all spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Warren Grimes, who passed away Nov. 3, 2006; and two sisters, Lucille Steele on March 1, 2007, and Velma Dotson in 1953.
Surviving are two sons, Warren J. Grimes of Utica and Barry L. Grimes of Owensboro; a very special niece, Joyce Grimes Daugherty of Beaver Dam; five grandchildren, Eric Grimes (Nikki), Pam May (Todd), Kristi Winn (Bobby), Tony Grimes and Kevin Grimes (Wendy); 10 great-grandchildren, Nick Shinn, Heather Shinn, Jack Winn, Emily May, Myles Grimes, Brianna Winn, Jager Grimes, Riley Grimes, Jacob Grimes and Jalyn Grimes and one great-great-granddaughter, Annabelle Shinn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday July 17, at the Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday and from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
