SELLERSBURG, Ind. — Dr. Mary Ann Matthews (Coffield), of Sellersburg, passed away at home on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, surrounded by her loving husband and family. Mary Ann was born on Oct. 21, 1938, in Fordsville, Kentucky.

She graduated from Fordsville High School in 1956. She obtained her teaching degree from the University of Louisville where she also obtained her doctorate in education.

She worked for many years as an educator and enjoyed helping young students improve their reading skills and older students and adults to expand upon their writing abilities.

She also served as a Sunday School teacher and taught in Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed reading, writing poems and was a passionate photographer of nature. She also enjoyed spending time with her cherished lab, Missy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George (Billy) and Anne Coffield.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert (Bob) Preston Matthews Jr.; three children, Robert P. Matthews III (Lola), Carol Matthews-De Castillo (Jose), and Joel Matthews (Barbie); three grandchildren, Joshua Matthews (Sirena), Brandon Matthews (Nicole), and Daniel Castillo-Matthews; one great-granddaughter, Daphne Rose Matthews; and one brother, Herman (Gene) Coffield.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, family, friends, and all who knew her.

Services are at 12 noon Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Fordsville Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Beatty Cemetery, Fordsville. Visitation is after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville is in charge of arrangements.
