WHITESVILLE, Ky. — Earl Stevens Reid, 87, of Whitesville, passed away on May 7, 2017. Earl was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Beaver Dam, Ky., to Earl W. Reid and Mildred (Stevens) Reid. He was married to Ferdie (Kelley) Reid, a Whitesville native, for 66 years.

Earl was a previous member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a current member of Whitesville Baptist Church. Earl was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in the 70th Tank Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division in occupied Japan as a radio operator.

Earl received a B.A. and an M.A. from Western Kentucky University, as well his Ed.S. from the University of Kentucky. He was a principal and teacher in the Ohio County school system for several years, and principal at Vevay (Indiana) High School. He was also the first director of the Madisonville Community College campus.

Earl then became a long-time sales representative for educational publishers throughout Kentucky and Indiana.

He is survived by his wife and three sons, Kelley Reid, Wayne Reid (Susan), and Lee Reid; four grandchildren, Megan King (Tim), Ryan Reid (Amanda), Tyler Reid (Alli), and Jordan Harvey (Jason); and great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Charlotte, and Elijah King, Lorelei, Henry, and Amelia Reid. Survivors also include his brother, Charles Reid; sister-in-law, Linda Kelley; as well as one niece and four nephews.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his great-granddaughter, Claire King.

The graveside service and burial will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Sunnyside Cemetery in Beaver Dam. All are welcome to attend. Cecil Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
